Cosmic Gate

Cosmic Gate is the German duo of Claus Terhoeven (Nic Chagall) and Stefan Bossems (Bossi), who began collaborating in 1999 in Krefeld. Their early work — including 2002's "Exploration of Space" and "The Drum" — leaned into hard trance and was a fixture of the late-90s/early-2000s German scene. Since then, no duo has documented the evolution of European trance more directly than Cosmic Gate. Through the 2000s, the project shifted toward melodic progressive trance with the albums Earth Mover (2006) and Sign of the Times (2009). Wake Your Mind (2011) and the Materia diptych (Chapter One: 2017, Chapter Two: 2017) consolidated the modern Cosmic Gate sound — a clean, melodic progressive approach that nonetheless retains the duo's appetite for euphoric peak moments. The Wake Your Mind imprint, launched in 2011, became one of the most respected boutique trance labels of the 2010s. Few duos have managed the transitions across trance's many phases as gracefully. Cosmic Gate played at iconic venues like the Avalon Hollywood and Privilege Ibiza in their hard-trance days; in the 2010s they were core fixtures at A State of Trance, FSOE, and Group Therapy events; today they continue to deliver Anjunabeats-aligned vocal progressive while still dropping hard-tinged tracks for purist crowds. Both members have spoken openly about the demands of long-term creative partnership — about how the duo has survived not by avoiding disagreement but by treating their differences as productive material. After more than 25 years and dozens of albums, EPs, and remixes, Cosmic Gate remains one of trance's most reliable sources of new music and one of its quiet elder statesmen.
