Paul van Dyk's story begins in communist East Berlin, where he grew up in the late 1970s and 1980s unable to access the Western music he could hear drifting across the border. Its focus on quality over quantity, depth over accessibility, and political consciousness over pure entertainment distinguishes it from more populist trance radio offerings. Van Dyk's selections regularly include tracks that challenge the listener's assumptions about what trance can sound like and what it can say.
The show's longevity is itself a statement: in a media landscape defined by short attention spans and rapid turnover, VONYC Sessions has maintained a consistent editorial vision for nearly twenty years. The Accident and the Return
In 2016, Paul van Dyk suffered a near-fatal fall from the stage at the Sunrise Festival in Poland. The accident caused serious injuries that required months of rehabilitation and raised real questions about whether he would continue performing at the highest level. Political Engagement and VANDIT Records
Paul van Dyk has always used his platform for political expression in a way that distinguishes him from most DJs. His opposition to the Iraq War, his vocal support for LGBTQ+ rights, his engagement with political campaigns (he has DJed at events connected to several German political causes), and his general willingness to speak about issues beyond music have made him a figure who stands for something beyond entertainment. "Love Stimulation," one of his most celebrated tracks, was explicitly conceived as a political statement about the power of music to transcend conflict.
VANDIT Records, his label founded in 2000, has served as the vehicle for sophisticated, politically aware trance — releasing music that shares van Dyk's commitment to substance and depth. Artists including Alex M.O.R.P.H., Ummet Ozcan, and others have built careers through the label.

Paul van Dyk at 50+ remains one of the most compelling artists in trance.
