John O'Callaghan

John O'Callaghan is one of the most respected DJ-producers to emerge from Ireland's late-2000s trance boom. Born in Tralee, he started DJing in his teens and broke through internationally in the mid-2000s with releases on Armada and Discover Records. His 2007 vocal collaboration with Audrey Gallagher, "Big Sky," became one of the era's defining vocal-uplifting moments and is still played at peak-time sets today. In 2008 he founded Subculture, a label and event series that became one of the most respected forces in the harder, more technical end of the genre. The Subculture compilation series — mixed by O'Callaghan, often alongside guest DJs like Bryan Kearney — captured the sound that the brand stood for: cinematic, technical, drive-forward trance with emotional depth and zero patience for cheap commercial moves. His album discography — Out of Nowhere (2010), Never Fade Away (2012), Find Yourself (2018) — explores the full range from hard tech-trance to vocal-led uplifting and contains some of the most ambitious long-form productions in the genre. "Stresstest" (2012) and his many collaborations with Bryan Kearney as Stoneface & Terminal-adjacent productions are essential listening for anyone interested in the technical end of modern trance. O'Callaghan has been a major touring force at venues including Avalon Hollywood, Output Brooklyn, the Coronet in London, and headlines FSOE and Group Therapy events worldwide. As an Irish DJ on the global stage, he has also helped legitimise Ireland's trance scene as more than just a regional curiosity — alongside Kearney, John Askew (UK), and others, he made 138 BPM tech-uplifting a core sound of the modern era.
