Subculture was founded in 2008 by Irish DJ-producer John O'Callaghan, originally as a compilation series and event brand alongside his work for Discover Records. The label quickly grew into one of the most respected names in harder uplifting and tech-trance — a curatorial home for the 138 BPM sound when much of the wider scene was softening toward big-room and progressive influences. Subculture's identity has always been clear: cinematic, technical, drive-forward trance with emotional depth and zero patience for cheap commercial gestures. The Subculture compilation series — typically mixed by John O'Callaghan alongside guest curators like Bryan Kearney, Sean Tyas, or Liam Wilson — became a benchmark for fans of the harder modern sound. The label has been a launching pad for major artists including Bryan Kearney, Sneijder, Sean Tyas, and Will Atkinson, and has hosted Subculture-branded events at Avalon Hollywood, the Coronet in London, and across Europe. Subculture remains, alongside FSOE and Damaged, one of the genre's most important guardians of harder, faster, technically sophisticated trance.
