Biography

Magik Muzik was launched in the early 2000s as a Tiësto-curated sub-label within the Black Hole Recordings group, named after the long-running Magik mix-compilation series that Tiësto had been releasing since 1997. The imprint became the institutional home for Tiësto's most-celebrated original singles and albums during the Just Be (2004) and In My Memory (2001) era — the period when he transitioned from a respected Dutch trance DJ to one of the most recognisable names in global dance music. Magik Muzik continued operating after Tiësto formally departed for his own Musical Freedom imprint in 2009, with Black Hole continuing to release material under the Magik Muzik name and the original Magik mix-series catalogue remaining a continuous reference point for long-form trance set construction. The label's historical significance is hard to overstate: the 1990s and early 2000s Magik mixes essentially codified the modern long-form trance DJ set, and many of the records that defined progressive trance through that era passed through the imprint. Magik Muzik is preserved today as one of the genre's most consequential editorial documents.
